Jim Morrison, Dawn's HWY

Earlier this summer I created and launched a Patreon page for my writing. Since then I’ve realized most people are familiar with my work as The Doors Examiner, a column I wrote from 2009 until July of 2016. It garnered a reputation as a reputable source for information on The Doors, and I made a lot of friends. So I have put together a very cool Patreon premium I think Doors fans will really like. It‘s called “Dawn‘s HWY.”

A few years back I started a screenplay called “Dawn’s HWY” about an incident in Jim Morrison’s life that has generated a lot of speculation. In January 1966, Jim Morrison, Phil O’Leno, and Felix Venable disappeared into the wilds of the Mexican desert. When Morrison and Venable reappeared a few days later they were covered with bruises and spinning a story of how they killed O’Leno in the desert. O’Leno’s father, who hadn’t heard from his son but heard this story, had Morrison picked up for questioning. The events of that road trip and speculation of what may have happened is the starting point of the screenplay.

Here’s the first scene:

FADE IN:
EXT. STREETSIDE PHONE BOOTH – NIGHT
A shadowy figure walks from a parked car to the phone booth that is lit from the inside. The figure goes into the phone booth, and picks up the phone.
CUT TO:
CU OF HIS MOUTH
JIM
Yeah, we wasted him.
CUT TO:
EXT. SUNSET STRIP – DAY
A lithe young man, 21, walks down the Sunset Strip, circa January 1966. He’s dressed in black jeans that look like they’ve been on him a couple of days, a black t-shirt, and an open jacket over that. This is Jim Morrison prior to the fame of The Doors. He has a couple of bruises and scratches visible on his face. Suddenly a passing police cruiser screeches to a halt in front of him. Two cops get out of the car.
COP
Are you Jim Morrison?
JIM
(Defiantly)
Yeah.
COP
You’re under arrest.
The cop pushes him against the wall of a nearby building and pats him down.
JIM
What for man?
COP
Suspicion of murder.
CUT TO: …

If you would like to read more of the screenplay, for $5.00 a month you can access a few more pages, and every month hereafter I will publish more scenes from the screenplay. If I get stuck or if I’ve made some grievous Doors error, leave a message and with some audience participation we can put together a really cool work. To subscribe go to https://www.patreon.com/Jymsbooks and find the Dawn’s HWY premium on the right hand side of the screen!
